It has now been three weeks since the Sandwich campaign issued a debate challenge to incumbent Paul Ebert. Since that time, Ebert has continued to stonewall the public.
Ham Sandwich has a fully-functional web site. Paul Ebert does not.
Ham Sandwich has a blog supporting him. Paul Ebert does not.
Ham Sandwich has a YouTube video touting his campaign. Paul Ebert does not.
Ham Sandwich is willing to debate. Paul Ebert is refusing to even speak to reporters.
The people of Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park deserve better from their elected officials.

From the May 14th Washington Examiner:
Time for a smoked and cured candidate?
A group of Prince William County activists have pork on the mind, but it has nothing to do with wasteful spending. Rather, some conservative bloggers are touting the candidacy of a ham sandwich to take the place of Commonwealth Attorney Paul Ebert, a Democrat who has held the post for nearly 40 years.
The Web site www.votehamsandwich.com promises that “Hamilton ‘Ham’ Sandwich, Esq.,” as the sandwich is formally known, “possesses every bit the same skills and qualities as” Ebert.
According to Greg Letiecq, who runs the Black Velvet Bruce Li blog, the idea that a ham sandwich could do a better job than Ebert had been circulating among some local bloggers. He said Jim Riley, who writes the Virginia Virtucon blog, “came up with the graphic of the ham sandwich, and everybody was just dying. So it kind of ballooned from there.”
Letiecq said there may be a formal campaign kickoff at a local deli, and there is talk of establishing a PAC and distributing yard signs.
“It is possible that there will be thousands of yard signs encouraging people to write in a ham sandwich,” he said.
Letiecq said it’s a case of “feel-good viral marketing” in an attempt to affect the November election. But the effort isn’t totally tongue in cheek: If the campaign caught on, he asked, then “would [Ebert] run in a special election after he lost to a ham sandwich? Probably not.”
Ebert did not respond to a voicemail seeking comment.

Yep, He’s A Sandwich
A number of folks have been asking “what happens if Ham Sandwich wins?”
Let’s start with the Ham Sandwich campaign’s answer to this question:
… Ham would probably choose not to take the oath of office, which would require a special election to be held to fill the office with someone who would, or at least is capable of taking the oath. There would be no incumbent officeholder, and likely there would be a pretty broad range of candidates for voters to choose from, rather than a single candidate for this office.
What isn’t being said here is that a victory by Ham Sandwich would shift the political landscape in Virginia in some very positive ways. Long-term incumbents have depended on the favors they’ve granted and the dirt they’ve dug up on potential challengers in order to insulate themselves from defeat in elections, and it’s been that way for a very long time. If you can scare off enough challengers, you’ve got the ultimate in job security.
But what happens when your opponent is someone you can’t beat up? Now candidates have to win elections not based on how badly they can hurt the other guy, but how well they can demonstrate that they deserve to be in office. If they can’t do this, and a quirky sort of viral-marketing campaign manages to unseat them, now no one is the incumbent. Everyone has to prove themselves. And candidates who may previously thought that it was too risky to challenge a powerful and entrenched incumbent now have a clear path to demonstrating their qualifications for office and running a strong campaign.
Ham can win this one. If he does, we could end up improving the quality of our elected representatives by quite a bit. The threat of a challenge by Ham Sandwich in subsequent races might well get long-term incumbents to actually work for the privilege of being re-elected. And the voters would come out ahead by quite a bit.
This isn’t just about some low-profile election in a locality, although that’s an important race for the folks in Prince William County who have to deal with Paul Ebert right now. This has a larger purpose which could make a big difference for all Virginians.
We really need Ham Sandwich to win this one.
